Innovate: it’s a word! But then, in practice, how do you do it? It is a question that, like a Chinese drop, rhythmically falls on the heads of millions of entrepreneurs from all over the world, who feel the earth missing under their feet, besieged by a global competition never seen before and by broadsides of technological innovations that at the beginning always seem to be wonderful opportunities to be seized and which then soon turn out to be simply more obligations, to be fulfilled in order not to die, but which are certainly not enough to give the boost that would be needed: ecommerce, cloud, ai, iot, erp, csr, crm, all acronyms which, in short, mean the same thing: “spend, equip and work harder than before but don’t fool yourself, it is not sure that it will be enough to stay afloat\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead it is not true. You can seriously innovate, but you have to think outside the box, actually to really step out of the box of the ordinary”, says Pier Ludovico Bancale, who looks at me with two penetrating eyes and a conciliatory and challenging smile, from which it is like if a cartoon pops up saying “hey, wake up that neither you nor I have time to waste.”<\/span><\/p>\n

A look that at first does not even make you notice that his glasses have different lenses, one oval and the other with a rounded rectangle. But it is the only eccentricity of a man who – with a long curriculum as an international manager and startupper – is currently launching a project precisely aimed at answering the question: “innovate yes, but how ?!”. The answer lies in the patented method in a company called iMasterminds and which is, in essence, a company that produces innovation using a system of creative intelligence in a completely different way from the ordinary.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn order for companies to be successful, entrepreneurs and managers ask to promptly change the speed of their business and to do this it is essential to be able to imagine the future\u201d explains Bancale; who has behind – it was said – a respectable managerial history, from Johnson & Johnson to Colgate-Palmolive, from L’Oreal to Indesit, with ten years of work in Russia and who today is at the helm of the largest chain of Italian restaurants in Europe and the second in the world. And who has conceptually changed his life since 2006: manager yes, but also startupper. Flanked by Francesco Trapani (the former boss of Bulgari) and Matteo Marzotto, he launched BootB, a brilliant startup that grew up to be purchased in 2012 by an American “big tech” who wanted to remain anonymous so as not to have to admit that by now even Silicon Valley buys good ideas straight away, because those hyper-structured giants stifle internal ideas, and are far from favoring them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith BootB we had a great intuition, which is the offshoot of iMasterminds. We had collected an extraordinary database of 35,000 creatives from 163 countries – says Bancale – by enlisting them with a large worldwide initiative that consisted of distributing T-shirts in front of the doors of the 324 most important advertising agencies in 18 cities: New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, London, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Cairo, Moscow, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Shanghai, Tokyo and Sydney. On the t-shirts, there was an unsettling invitation: “In the agency work he creates for client companies, in his spare time for those you like!”. An \u201cout of the box\u201d message, which is the mantra of Bancale. Where the “box” from which to exit – as he explains in an “apostolic” video in which he promotes his company – is represented by the set of behaviors and beliefs that each of us carries within and binds us in the way of thinking and also to innovate, repressing it and always leading it back, basically, to the reframing of old ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat recruiting of creatives through T-shirts went very well – recalls Bancale – and the memberships skyrocketed within a few hours\u201d. A harvest of brilliant minds, and for this reason nicknamed masterminds, bet together with BootB, and the company took a stake. Customers \u201cposted\u201d their briefs on the platform and creatives proposed their solutions. When one of them got the job, the platform retained 20% and the rest went to the creative, without intermediaries and in total transparency. \u201cI remember Jacques S\u00e9gu\u00e9la, the French advertising guru – says Pier Ludovico – phoned to tell me: but in this way the world of our agencies will disappear!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

This did not happen, and BootB instead disappeared, because the big tech buyer took over the database of creatives, but had no interest in growing the format on its premises: however, the experience was invaluable. Based on the concept so well concretized by BootB, on the successful attempt to aggregate a community of brilliant minds, Bancale went further. From creativity in communication – experimented with high approval by giants such as Disney, Lego, Ferrero, Est\u00e9e Lauder, EMI Music, Unilever, 20th Century Fox, Mondadori and many others, to creativity in innovation: “This time not against the consulting majors , but alongside them – explains Bancale – because we innovate by accelerating the business idea and the client company that adopts it then chooses which consultancy company to work with to implement it “.<\/p>\n

Obviously, if the creatives from which BootB started were a myriad, in this case the numbers are very different, as well as the recruitment methods: Pier Ludovico for more than 10 years has continued to skim and refine the database, which today of brilliant minds number a thousand: classified, polarized and absolutely brilliant. But the pivots that are used in each innovation project are 12, as apostles of this entrepreneurial creativity “out of the box” which serves to prevent innovation from appearing to companies only as an extra tax and not, as it should instead being, a strategic weapon to rethink the business and get it off the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Open innovation, in its time, was the precursor of a new way of working, flexible and fast, capable of bringing innovations from outside the company – generally through universities or startups – of which businesses from all over the world they had and need, to overcome the increasingly difficult challenges of the markets “, reconstructs Bancale:” But today, innovating has become so complex that even the ‘open’ mode is often no longer enough, because the world is moving at such a speed to require even faster and, above all, more disruptive innovations. Our system, which was not born by chance in Italy and makes use of the creative individualism that is typical of our way of thinking and working, consists in accelerating incredible ideas in a way that overseas would define ‘out of the box’. And the traditional open innovation, born at the beginning of this century, today becomes precisely ‘out of the box innovation’. iMasterminds is the first accelerator of business ideas, with a patented method all over the world called M12, which is based on the extraordinary strength generated by opposites \u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes: because the 12 “apostles” who carry out the customers’ requests for innovation are ingenious characters – called masterminds precisely, which in English means’ people with a brilliant mind ‘- who are able to think “beyond” the classic innovation approaches, more and more often inadequate in allowing the birth of truly innovative ideas. And they are organized into six pairs of brilliant and opposing minds who confront and clash over the solutions to be produced. Heterogeneous training: astronauts and managers, chess players and designers, developers and advertisers, writers and chefs, engineers and conductors.
